Fossilised forest Curio Bay.
Curio Bay is the home of a subtropical forest which grew during the Jurassic period 180 million years ago.This forest was over-whelmed by sand. Over the ages the sediment turned to sandstone, and silica replaced the woody structure of the trees in the buried forest.Later the action of the sea cut away the sandstone, exposing the fossilised floor of that ancient forest.At low tide you can see stony stumps and fallen trunks, up to 30 metres long, of trees related to the New Zealand Kauri and the Norfolk pine.It is one of the few places in the world where one can view such a forest on such a scale.PLEASE NOTE THAT THE COR-ORDINATES ARE ABOUT 1KM FROM THE FOREST ALLOWING OPPORTUNITIES TO VIEW THE VARIOUS WILDLIFE FROM THIS STARTING POINT AS WELL AS THE VIEWS. Access to the forest is S46.39.700 E169.05.881.Please go ahead and log your find I trust that if you say you have seen the petrified forest then you have done just that, it is not necessary to wait for my permission.However part of the Earthcache criteria is that you need to answer a specific question so here it is....again whether it is answered or not is secondary to actually visiting the site.When these ancient trees were growing in this region what continent was New Zealand part of?
