Geocache Description:

The cache is located on the boundary between an ancient woodland (Tocil Wood) and a new ‘Millennium’ wood (Gibbet Hill Wood).

Tocil Wood and an adjacent wet meadow form a local nature reserve, managed by Warwickshire Wildlife Trust. The wood is at least 400 years old, and earthworks within it date back to the first and second century AD. Active coppicing is undertaken by groups of volunteers. The coppiced areas are allowed to re-grow, particularly benefiting birds such as willow warblers and blackcaps.

Gibbet Hill Wood is one of 200 woods created through the “Woods on your Doorstep” project. The 26-acre site was given to the Woodland Trust by Coventry City Council in 1999. The wood was planted with help from local people, students and girl guides. Unfortunately, the information board has been vandalised.

This is the second cache to be created by ‘A Coventry Way Association’. The association was originally formed to promote a long distance footpath, A Coventry Way, and to support local authorities in the path’s maintenance. Our primary aim was to encourage people to discover and use the local countryside. A book of 21 Circular Walks was produced, broadly based on the main walk. Our plan is to set out a series of caches, located on or near each of the 21 walks. See ‘www.acoventryway.org.uk’ for further information.

The microcache is a standard 35mm film canister, containing just a log book (take you own writing implement). It is found close to the path on walk 5, near to the University of Warwick. Walk 5 starts from the War Memorial Park (park and ride) at N 52 23.566 W 001 31.686; however, you can park much closer, either at the University or on roads near to the cache, at N 52 22.824 W 001 32.650.
