Cache is located on a new road near Index that climbs up to some
incredible views of the Sky Valley and surrounding peaks. Good
gravel road and an easy climb to the cache. Located at 3,173 ft.
with views in all directions. You are looking for a 30 cal ammo
box. Don't forget the camera.
I was out today checking new geocaching spots and this new road
took me to some incredible views on a sunny warm winter day. There
is a new communication site going in, so don't block the road. See
the driving directions to
Mt. Baring View cache From the road junction you'll go north
and climb on a new excellent gravel road about 3 miles. Bring a
camera and plan to do these caches on a decent weather day. Views
are exceptional!....There is very little snow up here and would be
a excellent snowshoe area when we do get snow again. Road has been
plowed to the top in recent weeks, so should be accessable all
winter of 2005. If the road is gated, then you will have to walk
about 1/4 mile up the road and then a short climb of about 100 ft.
to the top of the knoll. There's a memorial to a lost dog Tony near
a good parking spot. Enjoy the views.
Update: 2-8-05 There is a new No Tresspassing sign that went up
at the gate. I spoke with the work foreman at the communication
site and he said there have been some thiefs and damage done. The
county property is the immediate area around the communication site
and the top of the knoll where the cache is is Forest Service land.
He said there is no problem parking at the gate and walking in from
there. It only adds about 1/4 mile to your walk. Stay away from the
construction site and you should be fine.
Update: 2/18/06 New gate at LJ's cords appears to be staying
locked. This will add about 3 miles R/T and 900 ft. elevation gain
on a good gravel road.
