Geocache Description:

PLEASE BRING YOUR OWN PEN(CIL)!

This is one of four caches placed as a tribute to the great shipyards in Göteborg.

Warning! There has been a wasp incident near this cache, so be careful. It was close to a pair of trees not far from the cache.

In the 1960's and 1970's Göteborg was one of the leading shipbuilding sites in the world but today there are only memories left. In the mid 1970's about 15000 people were employed in the shipping industry. Counting all kinds of suppliers up to 200 000 people was depending on the shipping industry, including my late fathers company! The last ship that was built left the Arendal shipyard 1988. It was the icebreaker Oden.  I was actually working on the last ship equipped at the Eriksberg Shipyard (in the summer of 1981), even after the shipyard was officially closed. There are some more shipyards to be found, but the four giving the names to the caches are the most important ones.

Enjoy the caches in the hot parts of Göteborg there is a lot of action on the old shipyards sites. In the more central ones there are mainly residential buildings, and at Arendal there are industrial areas.

More information about the shipyards can be found here: Varvshistoriska Föreningen i Göteborg (unfortunately only in Swedish)

Götaverken 1841 - 1977

Founded as Keillers Verkstad 1841 by engineer Alexander Keiller, of Scottish descent. Götaverken was one of the largest shipyards in the world, up to the 1970's.

The cache is placed in a park that shares the name with both the founder of the shipyard, and the founder of the park! It is placed where you have an excellent view of the old shipyard area. The remains are a repair yard, still named Götaverken.
