Robert Hall Tinker arrived in Rockford in 1856, at age 19, to work for a wealthy young widow, Mary Dorr Manny. In 1865, after traveling through Europe, he was inspired to build his unique Swiss Cottage overlooking Kent Creek. He surrounded his home with gardens, trees and vines. Adding to the charm of this estate was a suspension bridge crossing the creek and a three-story barn to make possible the operation of a gentleman's farm. Robert Tinker and Mary Manny were married in 1870 and became one of Rockford's most influential couples. Tinker served as mayor in 1875 and was a founding member of the Rockford Park District. Tinkers Cottage still contains the Tinker family's original furnishings, artwork and personal diaries, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Tours are available Tuesday through Sunday at 1,2,and 3p.m. The geocache is along the Kent Creek. Do not climb the cliff. Sign log only, no trade items. Hide as found. Do not climb/scale the cliff. Geocache responsibly. Check the Geocache ratings, then adjust your search accordingly.
