Een combinatie van een noordwester storm en springvloed zorgt er voor dat het zeewaternivo zo hoog stijgt dat de dijken het water niet meer tegen kunnen houden. Het water stroomt in sommige gevallen over de dijken of breekt soms door de dijken.
In Colijnsplaat is er bij de haven een opening in de dijk die voor een makkelijke toegang zorgt van de haven vanuit het stadje. Deze opening kan afgesloten worden met 'vloedplanken', lange balken die het water tegen moeten houden bij hoogtij of storm.
Door de zware storm konden deze balken en de stenen kolommen, waar de balken in lagen, de enorme kracht van het water niet bolwerken.
Het verhaal gaat dat de bewoners van Colijnsplaat hun eigen lichaamskracht gebruikten om de balken op hun plaats de houden. De lokale schoolmeester, een lange man, keek over de balken heen en iedere keer als er een nieuwe golf aan kwam schreeuwde hij 'houen jongens!', zodat de mensen zich tegen de golf schrap konden zetten.
Eén van drie, van hun ankers losgeslagen schepen strandde precies voor de opening en redde Colijnsplaat voor een grotere ramp.
Meer dan 1800 mensen zijn in Nederland omgekomen tijdens deze tragische gebeurtenis. |
History:
1953, February 1st.
A combination of a northwestern storm and springtide causes the seawater level to rise so high that dikes can not block the water anymore. In some cases water flows over the dikes or breaks through the dikes.
In Colijnsplaat is, near the harbour, a gap in the dike to allow easy access from the town to the harbour. This gap can be sealed off through 'floodplanks', long wooden beams that keep the water away in case of high tide or storm.
Due to this heavy storm these beams and the stone collums, they were fitted in, could not hold the immense strength of the water.
The story goes that the people of Colijnsplaat used their own physical strength to keep the beams in place. The local schoolteacher, a tall man, looked over the beams and every time a new wave arrived he shouted 'houen jongens!' ('hold on people!'), so the people could brace themselves against the wave.
One of three ships that broke their anchorage stranded exactly in front of this gap and saved Colijnsplaat from further disasters.
Over 1800 people died in the Netherlands during this tragic event. |
