Geocache Description:

A few kilometres east of Grandcamp the cliffs of Pointe the Hoc tower thirty metres above the beach and on this site the Germans had built a heavy artillery battery. It was a great threat to the beaches where American troops were going to land. It was not sure that the aerial bombardments would neutralize the battery and a decision was therefore taken to attack the position at dawn on D-Day, sending Rangers by sea to scale the cliff using ropes and ladders.

Even 60 years afterwards the scarred cliff gives the visitor an idea of what all those young men must have endured here.

Small note on cache maintenance: I visit the area 2-3 times per year. I have also contacted 2 different geocachers in France who have promised to be "foster-parents" for the cache, should it be necessary. They are "Live your dreams" and "garenkreiz". Thanks!
