If you are familiar with the big, sloped planters inside NorthPark Center, then you know another place that we used to love skating. This is not something that I am proud of, but the 4 inch lips that now stick out around the top edge were installed to keep stupid kids like us from skating these planters. As cool as they were to skate, they were only good for two or three passes at them before mall security would arrive and run us off. They never detained us or called our parents. However, once while walking through the mall with my dad, (sans skateboard), a security guard recognized me and told my dad that I'd have to leave the premises. He was SO embarassed and I was SO busted. I think I lost my skateboard for a month.
Anytime there was a skate contest in Dallas, the pro skaters from all over the country would want to stop by and have a stab at the planters. After one such contest in 1983, this image of California pro, Mike McGill, showed up as the center spread in Transworld Skateboard Magazine, (notice the lip at the top of the planters were still flush with the bricks).
