This is a cache for those not in a hurry, out for a Sunday mooch perhaps,maybe even lunch or picnic.
A tour around the Sussex village of Ashington, once a stopping off point to change your horses, before going over the Downs to the coast, or conversley after the Downs and on to London.
The A24 used to run through the centre of the village and the traffic must have been horrendous to live with. Today the quiet main road is known as the Old London Road, and the traffic passes the village by, almost noiselessly to the East.
Since the Bypass was built in 1994, the village has seen many new properties built, and now has a quiet suburban dormitory feel.
This trek will take in a few historic sites of old Ashington that hopefully will be of interest. You may choose to walk, but it can be driven around, except for the final clue and the cache itself….far better to drive here !
There is a very convenient public house en route.

There was once a water mill here, that was owned by the same family for many generations. That has now been replaced by a Turbine, and is housed in a corrugated building and no longer grinds corn. The Miller used to live very close in a house built in the 1600's. Today it is a Hotel.

An ancient Inn dating from the late 1600's. It has had a new façade, and is a popular watering hole. This is where the horsedrawn coaches were once housed.

This building housed the stage coach horses, whilst the building to the right used to be The Swan public house and catered for the passengers needs.
Post Horses is now an antique shop.

St Peter & St Paul's church. N50 55.885 W000 23.703
This ancient old church dating back to the 15th century, was extended in 1871. The wooden stocks for the bells were renewed as a millenium project. One of the bells is believed to be the oldest in Sussex dating back to 1350. Take a semi-circular seat for a moment and record how old Sarah Buck was when she died.

This super new (Nov '03) public building has a metal plaque near the entrance which gives a brief history of the village.

A land title was granted in 1872 for the building of this school.The school was extended in the 1970's and there were even classrooms across the road, which were in full use until the opening of the new school in 2000.

There has been a church here for c.1000 years, as evidenced by the Doomsday Book. Once owned by the Abbey of Fecamp, they had to pay rent of 400 bushels of salt and ten casks of wine annually, for this and 'other lands', to Battle Abbey.
Take a pew and enjoy the view to Chanctonbury Ring, (if in season, maybe even scrump a Fig !).

Now you have completed all the clues, you'll be pleased to hear that the cache is only a few metres away..We found the GPS to be having a bad 'air day, so if the co-ords are not spot on, then blame the trees !!
The cache is a green plastic box containing some small items.
This cache is dedicated to S.I.C.A.D, five members of our family that are leaving Ashington to begin a new chapter of their lives in Western Australia.
