C.C.C. Tribute Multi-Cache

This cache has been archived.

VirginiaSeeker: This is a fun cache with history, hiking, scenery and a great park. But, WVA State Parks want the cache moved every year, something I'm not able to do because of distance. So, enjoy your stay at Watoga, but this cache is archived.

Geocache Description:

In Watoga State Park

As geocachers, we are indebted to the men of the Civilian Conservation Corps. Eventually, there were some 2,650 C.C.C. camps located in every state as well as in Hawaii, Alaska, and Puerto Rico with more than 600,000 men employed. While many camps were in western states, the CCC did considerable work in West Virginia and Virginia. Watoga State Park in West Virginia is a great example of the conservation work and achievements of by these remarkable men in the 1930s and 1940s that left a lasting impact on our environment and outdoor recreation today. To learn more about the CCC, visit (visit link)

On the ground, a good place to explore the C.C.C. is Watoga State Park. In this multi-cache you will visit this lasting tribute to the men of the Civilian Conservation Corps. You may hike the entire cache, but you may want to drive or paddle portions. To start, set your coordinates to

N 38 06.996 W 080 07.673

At this location you will come face to face with a C.C.C. Worker and you will find answers to two questions. First, what were the years of the C.C.C.? Record your answer as:

1 9 A B to 1 9 C D

Second, on what date was this memorial dedicated? Record your answer as:

E F / G H / I J K L

Next, set your coordinates to

N 38 06.997 W 080 07.069

If you are lucky, this building will be open and you can learn more about the C.C.C. If it is closed you can still find the next clue by peering in the windows on either side of the door. In the building there are at least two triangular Watoga C.C.C. banners with a number on them (same on both). Record the number as:

M N O P

Now is the time to find the cache. Set your coordinates to

N 38 E(H+D).GL(P-M) W 080 E(K-O).B(L-M)O

The cache is a small plastic bottle and has four state quarters in it: Connecticut, Kentucky, Mississippi, and New Jersey. There is also paper and pencil to log your find. Please sign the log, add a new state quarter (to represent all the states where C.C.C. camps were located), and take nothing. When the bottle gets close to full, we (or perhaps another geocacher who gets there before us) can take the money and donate it to the curator of the C.C.C. Museum to, in a small way, help preserve the memory of the C.C.C. Workers of Watoga and all across America.

Thanks to Team Minnehaha for their assistance.
