Indian Mountain lookout tower
The route to Indian Mountain involves an 11 mile drive from Nordman, Idaho if the gate on Forest Road 1362H is open (from November 15 to April 1), or about 1.5 miles shorter if the gate is closed. After the roughly 1.5 mile journey on Road 1362H you will come to the Indian Mountain Trailhead, and from there it is a short but steep half-mile hike up to the lookout tower at the summit. The mountain sits just a quarter-mile inside Washington from the Idaho border, and is in fact more easily accessed from the Idaho side of the ridge.
The roads leading up to the tower are in pretty good shape, although you'll want to be sure to use a vehicle capable of handling rough terrain. Take Forest Road 1362 off of Road 302 (the continuation of Highway 57) and keep an eye out for the at-times gated Road 1362H located at N 48° 39.863', W 117° 1.334'. The trailhead is located at N 48° 39.608', W 117° 01.779'. It is unsigned and located near a switchback in Road 1362H. You know you missed it if you end up at a dead-end a half-mile later. At the trailhead, ignore the abandoned roadway on the right and head left up the steep ATV trail that leads to the summit. This is a foot-only trail; only the lookout gets to use motorized vehicles on it. You will gain approximately 500 feet on the hike up.
The best views along the hike are actually from the open clearings to the east about halfway up. The lookout tower is not visible until you are practically on top of it due to the trees surrounding the mountain top clearing. The original lookout tower was constructed in 1933 and was replaced by the present 40' treated timber tower in 1953. The lookout is staffed in the summer and is on the National Historic Lookout Register. The tower was manned when I arrived, but a thunderstorm was sweeping through the area at the time and I chose not to bother the no doubt busy lookout.
The cache requires no bushwhacking and is easily reached from the trail. Refer to the spoiler picture if you have any difficulties. When you rehide the cache, please check to be sure that the container is not visible from the trail in order to prevent accidental discovery and muggling.
