Jungle Habitat- the Maze Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

OReviewer: From the Northern Region Office, New Jersey State Parks Department:

Over a year ago New Jersey enacted a policy that all geocachers must obtain a permit to have their cache on State Park property. We have informed all geocaching host that this is their responsibility and have given them ample time to go about getting their permits. At this time, over a year later, there are still several caches that haven’t complied.

We ask that as the land managers for the attached properties we would like to have these illegal caches removed.

Based on the list provided by the state, I am forced to archive this listing. If you have a permit, get a permit or don't believe your cache is on state park/forest land, please contact me via email. Make sure you include the GC code.

If you don't plan to get a permit, please remove your geocache so it doesn't become geo-trash.

Geocache Description:

This is a Weird New Jersey cache. For related information, visit weirdnj.com.and click on the links.Jungle Habitat closed in the late 1970s, but the legend lives on. It only recently re-opened as a State Park, and while evidence of making it more hiker-friendly are clear, it is still a green, twisty, buggy, maze. Criss-cross roads and fences everywhere, many topped with barbed wire, add to the general weirdness of the place. Park at the entrance near the airport. The remains of the orginal sign are still there. There is an opening in the fence, so proceed on through. You would be wise to program the coordinates for your car, because this is not a place you want to be wandering around for a long time. Especially not after dark.Joek remembers this as a drive-through attraction, where wild animals came up to your car. You had to keep your windows shut, for obvious reasons, which, in the days before everyone had air conditioning, may have precipitated the closure of this former Warner Brothers park. That and the reports of errant wild animals scaring housewives in the nearby urban areas explain its demise as atourist atraction.Even now, a certain feral odor clings to the site, and it is not hard to imagine lurking shapes in the darkness of the overgrowth. You may not need safari gear, but bring that bug repellant.
