Geocache Description:

Journey back to the Paleozoic era.

To find the natural wonder and cache, from Saint John, get on Highway 1 and head east. The site is between Bloomfield and Norton. The natural formation is on the rockcut beside the highway at [N 45° 36.172 W 65° 43.696]. The wavy patterns are called ripple marks. The rocks that house them are approximately 350 million years old. According to the geologists at the DNR office in Sussex many, many moons ago the Saint John-Sussex area was covered by a large lake. Ripple marks were caused by wind or waves moving across the sand and mud of the shallower waters or shoreline. If you run your hand across the ripples you’re touching the shores of an ancient Paleozoic lake. Apparently some of the ripples contain fossilized worm trails and/or casings.

The key to finding the cache is planning ahead. Once you get there you’ll realize what I’m saying. The direct approach is difficult, please don’t attempt it. The cache is covered over at the base of a birch tree. The cache container is a plastic cereal box.
