Geocache Description:

The Lost Mermaid cache is situated close to the hamlet of Holy Well in East Shropshire. The cache is very close to a public footpath and only a short distance from the suggested parking at N 52 47.542 W 002 27.925. This is little more than a small layby on the right side of the road approaching from Holy Well. The cache is a small film canister .

This is one of the three 'Fables, Myths and Legends' series of caches. The coordinates above are correct.

The Other Caches Are:

Fables, Myths and Legends ... Ogo's Hole - Base level cache

Fables, Myths & Legends .. Shropshire's Robin Hood - Base level cache

Fables, Myths & Legends ... King Arthur's View - The Final Cache

Fable has it that two men on their way to work came across a mermaid here. She told them that there was gold in the well and that if they joined her in the water she would give them whatever they liked. One of the fellows apparently blasphemed during the encounter and this apparently gave Holy Well its name. We named the cache 'The Lost Mermaid' since, if indeed these chaps saw a mermaid there, she was surely lost. However, it has also been said that a mermaid was seen at Aqualate Mere and water from this spring enters the River Meese which empties into that mere. The full story can be read at the following URL:

The original cache contents are Log Sheets; Pencil; Pencil Sharpener and the Geocache note.Plus some small foriegn coins.

Please take care when replacing the contents that everything is as you found it. This is a little tricky but it can be done. Also beware of little muggles. A few live in the area but so far we have seen none near the spring. Near the spring itself, tree cover may make the GPSr a little erratic so if you are unlucky you may have to resort to the clue.

Many thanks to Holywell farm for granting permision to place this cache.
