The cache site is historic, you can wander arround Oamaru's Coastal Defence Location.
First you come to a stores building, further along is the place where the gun was emplaced.
Up behind the gun emplacement are the ruins of the barracks.
Down below there is also an Observation Post which can be wandered around. Great view and it would have been more unobstructed back 1942-45 when this area was manned constantly.
Drills and constant vigilance began in July 1942. One year later (July '43) on a very exciting day, the gun was successfully fired 3 times. Previous to this there had been no "action" except a false alarm of our own navy entering the waters and this was discovered before any shots were fired.
We named the cache "Sunrise Sunset" because both can be seen from here and because of the many hours of service, men from North Otago put in to protect our town and country.
