I have been driving by here for many years on my way to one of my favorite beaches. I have been meaning to stop here and add to the OHL cache series for some time now. So today, after doing some maintenance on another cache in Nehalem, I decided to finally make the stop and get it placed. Each of these Beaver Boards has a unique story to tell and this one is no different. But the Beaver Board is not the only story that is told at this particular wayside.
In order to locate this cache you will need to gather information from the listed coordinates. And then do some simple math to get the actual cache coordinates.
Cannon Beach
Cannon Beach was named for a cannon that washed ashore from the USS Sloop of War ‘Shark’ which was wreaked while attempting to leave the Columbia River in what year?

Ecola
On January 8th, 1806 William Clark and about 14 of the famous expedition reached a Tillamook village of five cabins on a creek he named Ecola, or Whale Creek. Three days earlier some men sent out from Fort Clatsop to locate a salt making site brought back whale blubber given to them by beach Indians. Appreciating the welcome addition to the explorer’s diet, Clark set out to find the whale or buy its blubber.
Traveling a perilous trail across Tillamook Head the food hunters, including Sacajawea and a young Indian guide, descended to “A beautiful sand shore”. Crossing a stream later named Elk Creek by early settlers, the food hunters found the whales skeleton.
