Geocache Description:

***UPDATE...This cache was muggled for the second time recently and we replaced it with a smaller 'pill bottle' type container. Thanks to "corncachers" for reminding me to change the cache size!! Traveling I-15 north from Las Vegas, take the Littlefield/Beaver Dam exit and travel north on Old highway 91 which will take you into St. George, Utah without passing through the Virgin River Gorge. The cache is located at an altitude of 3,714 feet.

We love to take the “road less traveled” and while the Virgin River Gorge is spectacular, the back roads provide a great deal of interest. We have been passing this site for many years and have always wondered who lived here. If you stop and take the time to check this site out you will find many interesting (and puzzling) items of interest. We would love to learn anything of interest about this site…if you know anything of its history or you would just like to tell us about your experience here, please share your knowledge and thoughts with the rest of us! Please respect and protect this site and if possible, leave it a little cleaner than it was when you arrived.

12/19/04 “Dos Mesquiters” visited the Virgin Valley Heritage Museum in Mesquite to look for information on Castle Cliff. They reported that the written and photographic information was minimal but they visited with a volunteer who was in her 80’s and has lived her entire life in the area. The took photographs of items found at the museum and compiled information from the volunteer and some of the entries on Broken Dreams and provided the following information:

Castle Cliff - Before I-15 was open through the gorge; Old 91 was busy with lots of trucks on this slow winding two-lane road from Nevada to Utah. There was a rest stop on the old highway called Castle Cliffs. Its main commodity was water. After going up "Utah Hill", many cars, as well as their occupants, overheated. They had those old canvas water bags that you put on your bumper and the water stayed cold by evaporation. However, it wasn't cheap. Overheated cars could get water at $1.00 a gallon, which would roughly be $20.00 a gallon in today's money! Gas was 12 cents a gallon. The gas station had a "take you for all you had" garage. They also had a gift shop, curios, rocks, and anything else tourists would buy. This was a perfect place for a rest stop because of the spring above the cliffs that supplied the water. On the same side of the road is a natural cave. Across the road were 3 motel-like cabins
