This is a short, pleasant hike for beginning backpackers or an
afternoon outing. The 23-acre lake sits in a subalpine setting,
surrounded by trees and vegetation within the Boulder River
Wilderness. At Deer Creek Pass, the views of Three Fingers, Mt.
Bullon, Jumbo Mtn., and others are spectacular. Huckleberries are
found here in late summer and early fall.
During most of the year this is a very short half mile hike with
very little in the way of elevation gain. At the time I placed the
cache (early June) the trail is still a bit wet, with small patches
of snow covering it in places.
In the winter this cache becomes much more difficult as the road
is closed to Motor Vehicles at the Mountain Loop Highway from Late
November thru the end of March. During this period the road becomes
a 4.6 Mile Snow-Shoe / Cross Country Ski trail with a 1600 foot
elevation gain.
From the Verlot Public Service Center (11 miles east of Granite
Falls), drive the Mountain Loop Highway for 12.5 miles to the Deer
Creek Road #4052 on the left. Follow this road for 4.2 miles to the
trailhead on the left.
