Geocache Description:

This cache marks the outlet of the now buried Fleet River

The Fleet’s course starts at the muddy swimming ponds in Hampstead. It then makes it’s way down the Thames valley, though Kentish Town, Kings Cross, Farringdon and ending up…. Well that would be giving too much away.

This now, subterranean, river was covered over from the 1730’s from St Paul’s to the Thames. This was mostly due to it’s stench after being used as an open sewer and drain for the effluvia from Smithfield meat market. Over the next 140 years, the Fleet was buried.

It has never seen sunlight since, except for an incident in the late 19th century, when part of the Fleet exploded! This was due to the ignition of a massive methane build up. It was said that the river’s spirit was trying to rise up again.

The cache coordinates will take you to the only spot to catch a Fleeting glimpse at the Fleet’s last moment before it joins the mighty Thames. Look over the railings and to your left.

The cache is nearby, attatched to something red and very, very big.

It is just tucked away out of sight.

I have made it difficulty 3, due to the large amount of victorian Ironwork in the area.

The outlet can only be seen at Low tide so it might be worth checking the THAMES TIDE TABLE
