Geocache Description:

On April 9th, 1924 “The Illinois # 3” drilled “into the pay,” and by the end of the month, the first royalty check was sent to the State of New Mexico.

This virtual is a very visual and interactive depiction of the dealings of the heart of the oil patch. The workings of the oil derrick and the men who work on it are all shown here, along with the history of some of the people who lived, worked, and died, in the pursuit of black gold. Yates Petroleum Corp., celebrating 80 years in the industry, along with two other independent oil companies in Artesia, Marbob Energy Corp., and Mack Energy Corp. dedicated this site to the people of Artesia. Also to the workers who, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, rain, shine, wind, snow, and dust work non-stop to provide energy for today’s demands. New Mexico oil and gas producers have paid 90% of the 7.7 billion dollars presently in the state trust fund. Thirty two million this year into the state royalties, and 58 million in production taxes, which are divided between the individual counties, and all the schools in the state. To date New Mexico has supplied 27 billion cubic feet of natural gas, and is second in production in the United States. Crude oil production puts New Mexico in 5th position.
This is a very handicap friendly site.
