This cache is situated on Omey Island off the Galway
coast.
The island is linked to the mainland by a huge sandbar which
disappears when the tide comes in. There is a roadway marked out by
a series of signs along the sandbar. These will guide you safely
accross to the island. However it is advised that you seek tidal
information locally, perhaps in the village of Claddaghduff, before
crossing to the island, as the tide will change every six hours, so
you could be stuck longer than expected! Also, dont attempt driving
over or back if the tide is coming in, as the tide can come in
quickly.
To get to the cache, drive to the end of the island, then follow
your GPS. The cache is in a purple lunchbox.
If you have enough time, its worth having a look at the peaceful
island. There is much history here, with evidence of many hundreds
of years of habitation. The graveyard on the island contains a tall
limestone Cross as a memorial to the victims of the Cleggan Bay
Disaster which occured in October 1927. A violent storm led to the
deaths of 26 men from Cleggan and Inisboffin and devestated the
local community for years to come. Marie Feeney's "The Cleggan Bay
Disaster", available in nearby Cleggan tells the grim tale and is
worth a look.
