Geocache Description:

Leave your Kicks on Route 66.

While out caching recently I chanced upon one of those strange sites that are all too common along Route 66. I don't know the history of the Route 66 Shoe Tree but maybe someone else can tell us about it. As the photo shows, this is a place to get rid of your old shoes by contributing to the Shoe Tree.

After doing a little Google search I've discovered that there are Shoe Trees across the country. They have been described as "the greatest embodiment of the American Spirit you can find on the highway (free of admission charge, anyway)."

"A shoe tree starts with one dreamer, tossing his or her footwear-of-old high into the sky, to catch on an out-of-reach branch. It usually ends there, unseen and neglected by others. But on rare occasions, that first pair of shoes triggers a shoe tossing cascade. Soon, teens are gathering up their old Adidas and Sauconys, families are driving out after church with Dad's Reeboks and grandma's Keds. The shoe tree blooms with polymer beauty. A work of art like this may last for generations, tracing our history by our sneakers . . . as long as the tree doesn't die. "

The Route 66 Shoe Tree cache is both a virtual and a tradiional cache. There is no normal container but if you use your imagination - the tree could be the cache container. The trade items are your old shoes. Instead of a log book, just sign your shoes and throw them in the tree.

To claim this cache - post a photo of yourself in front of the tree making your contribution.

Since folks travel from around the world to drive the Mother Road, soon this tree may be filled with the excess footwear from cachers everywhere. Imelda Marcos - where are you?
