A Walk In The Park Multi-cache

This cache has been archived.

Paul G0TLG: Oh well, it had a better run than I expected when I placed it, but it looks like it's time to put this one to bed and free up the area for someone who's better than me at cache maintenance. Thanks to everyone who searched and found, and to Easy Rambler and Barb110FFR who maintained it when I couldn't.

Geocache Description:

As the name suggests this multi will take you on a pleasant walk through some of the parks in the centre of Southampton. You'll mostly be on tarmac, with some roads to cross, but you may stray onto the grass in places. The final location may be difficult for buggies or wheelchairs, but only because of width of access, the terrain is easy all the way round.

The co-ordinates at the top of the page are for the location I checked first when planting the cache, but it may not be the most sensible one to start with!

Some history of the cache, and scans of the pages from the first log book (spoilers removed) can be found here.

The waypoints can be visited in any order, the final location is near the middle. The co-ordinates of the final location are:

N 50° 54.ABC, W 1° 24.DEF
Click here to download a LOC file of the waypoints for this cache.

and the letters can be exchanged for numbers using the following conundra:

At N50° 54.344 W1° 24.110 you'll find a structure which has a name (check the park maps!) and a number of legs. The number of legs is the same as the number represented in our puzzle by the first letter of the structure's name.

Find a plaque at N50° 54.392 W1° 24.129 bearing the name of a Mr Smith. The number of screws holding the plaque to its post replaces the second letter of Mr Smith's first name. Since both the plaque, and the tree it related to, have gone missing, I'll tell you that Mr Smith's first name was Daniel, and there were three screws.

Stand at N50° 54.616 W1°24.269, in front of a memorial to some brave men who shared a common specific occupation, with a picture of them at work. The first letter of the name of the occupation, is the number of men in the picture.

And while you're here, look for the Bible verse. The first letter of the last word, is the number of words in the top line.

Nearby find a statue to a mayor of the city, at N50° 54.583 W1° 24.195. The first letter of his occupation is the last digit of the year he died.

Now look around the structure at N50° 54.567 W1°24.464, until you learn the name of the artist responsible for "Enclosure". The first letter of his surname is the first digit of the year he made it.

Now you've done that lot, you can make your way to the final location, The cache is an "Altoids" tin concealed where it will hopefully be invisible to the casual passer-by! Please replace it carefully and check that it isn't visible from the path.

17th April 2007 - this cache has proved more popular, and survived for longer, than I ever expected, so I've replaced the micro with a "small" container in the same location. 4th November - as the small container went missing, I've replaced it with another micro in a slightly different location. It's within a few feet of the original, so the co-ords still work!
