Pleasant Valley Methodist Church, in rural Copiah County,
Mississippi, was organized between 1830 and 1840. The present
church building was constructed in 1840 and has been preserved in
very much its original state. Surrounded by high oaks and wooded
hills, the church seems truly to be "the church in the valley by
the wildwood".
Major Ruben Millsaps, for whom Millsaps College is named, grew up
in this community and received his early religious training in this
church. My parents were married in this church in August 1949 and
in my youth I swam in the nearby creek. In years past the church
got its water from a spring in the hillside. The 30mm ammo box
cache is located just a few feet from the original foundation of
the pumphouse that pumped water from the spring to the church. To
get the most from your visit, plan to come on a Sunday morning in
time for Sunday school at 10:00 AM. On the second and fourth
Sundays you can stay for preaching at 11:00 AM. Please take your
picture with the cache cam and re-hide the box like you found it.
