250metres above Loch Ness, easy access
This is a replacement for the Augustness cache that went the way of all flesh a while back. It’s a little further from the Loch than its predecessor (and many miles nearer Inverness), but in a much better location. This is a superb spot to take both children and grannies: there are plenty of well-maintained paths and wooden walkways, with lots of surprises for children to discover and play in, as well as places for the less active to sit and admire them. You will find lots of interest to do and see. A pair of binoculars may be handy - though not relevant to the geocaching!
Although the area is wooded, the cache location is in the open: to start with, though, my GPS showed an accuracy of about 20 metres. A bit of wandering about brought the accuracy down to about 8 metres, though.
The location of the cache can be reached very easily – paths and walkways accessible to prams, buggies etc. – the last few yards are off the path, however. The route is generally level, though the actual location is in tussocky, boggy ground.
Access from Loch Ness involves a very steep and twisty road, single track for much of its length – please drive with care!
There is a car park but it is not very clearly marked. The turnoff to it is at NH edadccefei (where a=1 etc.).
Our friend Mini Mog starts his journey from here, though he doesn’t look too happy about it. His avowed aim is to meet lots of other felines (real or toy) and to email postcards home.
