This cache brings you to the Leleiwi Lookout in the Haleakala
National Park. Many visitors miss this lookout in their rush to
reach the summit. This is a mistake because they miss one of the
best views of the crater and the possibility of seeing a glory or
"Specter of the Brocken". This is when you see your own shadow on
the clouds below surrounded by one or more rainbows. The Hawaiians
felt blessed to experience this because they believed this was a
promise from heaven that their souls would be taken care of.
To reach this cache watch for the parking lot for the Leleiwi
Lookout after the 17 mile mark. Walk across the street and follow
the trail to the cache location.
To log this cache you must first e-mail us the answers to the
following questions:
1. Where does the trade wind
inversion trap clouds?
2. What side of the island does most of the precipitation fall?
3. How many red arrows are on the sign?
Please do not give the answers in your log (even if it is
encrypted)!
Small note on cache maintenance: We have a friend
(non-cacher) who lives local to the cache (Paia) and checks on it
for us
