This
cache is inside a cave. It requires an able-bodied soul who can climb to reach it.
Bring Flashlights! Very close by is a great big balancing rock that
you can climb under.
There are 3 suggested routes to the Umbrella Rock area. All parking
areas are accessed from route 322.
The first is to park at N 41*18.913 W079*38.923. This is the
longest, but easiest walk. (2 miles along an old railroad grade) I
recommend this option.
The shortest but most difficult walk is from parking area
N41*18.132 W079*37.173. Here you park along the highway at the
roadcut, and bushwhack in. Band-Aids are available at the cache for
those who choose this option
An in-between option would be to park back the road at N41*18.294
W079*37.506.
During the warmer months, the cave entrance will very likely be
obscured by the very large ferns in the area. It is about 10 feet
back from the top edge of the cliff. Be careful up there. Cave is
not very big, and you won't get lost in there.
Use caution climbing over the large boulders. They are covered with
a thick blanket of moss. You will need some climbing skills to get
underneath Umbrella Rock itself, and even more skill to get on top.
(good luck) A bonus satellite cache filled with gems is hidden
under the umbrella. (I mined these quartz crystals myself in
Arkansas) One per visitor please!
This place is very lush in summertime. The moss is very thick and
covers everything. Please climb around carefully so we dont peel it
off, and generally try to minimize our impact on this sensitive
area.
