Lappajärvi
73 million years ago there was an explosion. In a split second a shining star turned to a nightmare. The meteorite that hit the Earth formed an immense crater at the point of present Lake Lappajärvi. The incident, which can be compared to a tremendous nuclear explosion, destroyed all organic life within a radius of hundreds of kilometres.
The stony meteorite, a little less than one kilometre in diameter, was completely destroyed in the explosion. Most of it got mixed into the melted and vaporised bedrock. As a result of the impact a series of new rocks was formed. The most significant of them are kärnäite and suevite.

Lappajärven kraatterin synnyttänyt, vajaan kilometrin läpimittainen meteoriitti tuhoutui räjähdyksessä. Pääosin se sekoittui sulaneeseen kallioperään. Törmäyksen seurauksen syntyi useita kivilajeja, joista tärkeimmät ovat kärnäiitti ja sueviitti.
