Geocache Description:

PLEASE NOTE!! - This cache is now over 6 years old has had the pleasure of the company of well over 200 individual visitors! It was planted in a time when the rules and restrictions on placing a cache were minimal and therefore myself or Pid cannot maintain it so please please please take some extra care replacing this well, out of the site of muggle vision, so that many more can enjoy finding it in the future! Thanks to all those who have visited so far!

IMPORTANT: As with any site of this kind, please pay the location much respect. The cache is NOT within 20 metres of the stone and therefore it is totally unnecisary to interfere with it in any way. Please also stay to footpaths to avoid erosion. If this instruction is followed your visit will be no more harmful for the location than that of any other visitor to this site.

Please note: This is a book swap cache. Inside the cache at the time of placing were 4 novels. Please only swap books for books (sunday mags etc not accepted!)

The South West coast of the Isle of Wight hides many hidden treasures as we recently found out for ourselves. Hopefully this cache will give visitors a chance to see a lesser known attraction that would normaly be passed without notice. There is easy access to the cache location from Mottistone Village via footpath no.43 just off Strawberry Lane & a short walk will reveal this forgotten monument.

During a short stay on the Isle in August '03 myself and Pid planted 2 caches, one of which is placed at the Longstone, the neolithic, or new stone age remains of a long barrow or burial mound. There are various stories which are told of this rocks dark past, rituals held by the romans & celts alledgedly took place here, some of which included the slaughter of Bulls & worship of Gods. It has almost certainly been a meeting place since the dark ages. Local folklore suggests the rock may have been thrown here by a giant or was dropped from a devils cart. Either way, it is an extremely powerfull sight and certainly commands a great pressence on the area. The second smaller stone was apparently moved by a local farmer or gentleman in search of treasures hidden below. Whoever was searching found nothing of value, the only treasure here is the aged rock itself. Enjoy the place & it's scenery, & most of all have fun finding the cache, hopefully it will serve as a pretty handy local library for some people :) Dan & Pid
