Geocache Description:

This is the second part of the Szolnok and it's surroundings multi cache line. This will quide you around one part of the Tisza outside of the city. Tisza is the main river of Szolnok. I advise you to start your trip here: N 47'10.839 E 20'14.872.

Once this place was an important watercourse, but today it's only a main canal of the area. At the firth of the Millér Tisza a dam was built in 1862 and in 1895 they made a pumping plant too. In theory, you can see an open air museum here about the machines used here, but unfortunatelly you only can visit it if you ask a permission before you come here. Because the museum is quite old and ruined, I don't really recommend it for you. This whole area is known az Miller all over the city, and once it was a nice weekend picnic place. Today the area is not the nicest, but hopefuly something just started to change.

The first part of the 8 km trip starts at the right bank of the Tisza where the red cross turist track goes. The given coordinates will leads you to the forest next to the bank, where you will find a 19x9 cm box, where besides the treasures you will find the next step too. Continuing the trip, on the right side you will see one of the goals of this trip, the Dead part of the Tisza.

"The Death Tisza of Kovácsi was born with the 77. intersection in 1850 at the right side of the Tisza. The length of it is 3,5 km. The average width is 45m, the area is 16 ha and the average deepth is 1m. It holds about 160 thousand m3 water. The river bed is very muddy and the water supply is only possible, when the Tisza has big water (mort than 650cm at Szolnok). This is a major natural protected area, the part of the Middle-Tisza Protected Area. It has notable landscape values. Mayor feeding place of the birds in the area. At autumn you can see a lot of black stork here."

At the right turn into the red sign, you will reach the Natural Protected Area. Soon, you will see the Dead Tisza. I was thinking abut the size of the caches, because this is a protected area, but I handled the problem. You can walk al the way on roads or little paths. If you don't like mosquitoes, bring some protection with you. Moreover, after heavy rain, and during flood, this cache become an extreme difficult cache.

After this, soon you will reach the banks of the living Tisza. The Tisza is the most Hungarian river came from Ukraine, from the mountains of Máramaros at 1800 m high. This is the second biggest river in Hungary and the length of the Hungarian part of it is 596 km. From this, 52 km is a border with Ukraine and Slovakia. The main right side rivers of the Tisza are, Bodrog, Sajó and Zagyva. The left side rivers are Túr, Szamos, Kraszna, Kõrös and Maros. The Tisza reaches the country at Tiszabecs, and continues it's journey as a border river between the plains of Szatmár and the hills of nyírség. After the corner of Záhony it's finally step into the country. The average descent of the river is 4,5-5,5 cm/km and the width are 100-160 m. After Rétköz, and Bodrogköz, the Tisza pass by the Zemplény and Bükk mountains and reaches the Nagykunság. At least it left the country at Szeget. At the upper part, the river is cold and clean. At the other part the silt makes the Tisza "blond". The curves cut off by the river regulation makes the dead parts of the Tisza, and mostly these are protected areas. The water level is controled by the dams at Tiszalök, and Kisköre. The lake of Kisköre Dam is the so called Lake Tisza. There's a lot of flats in the river, and in the corners the water is become deep drastically. Several ferrys used on the river. After the Tisza, you will reach the starting point soon.

The pictures could help much in the last few meters.
