Mt Napier (440m), a combined scoria and lava volcano, erupted 7000 to 8000 years ago and is Victoria’s youngest. The site comprises multiple scoria cones and eruption points with a ridge of spatter on the crater rim. The summit is marked by a trig point and a monument to Major Mitchell, who climbed and named it in September 1836. Mt Napier has several smaller craters on its sides, and the walk passes impressive volcanic features including a lava canal and tumulus.
This is the seventh in our Vulcan series of caches along the Volcanoes Discovery Trail, which we learned about while doing Derringer’s “What a Blast” cache. Brochures on the Trail can be obtained at the Colac, Hamilton, Port Fairy, Portland, Warrnambool, Tower Hill or Penshurst Visitor Information Centres in Victoria, and Millicent or Mt Gambier in South Australia.

Access is via the Hamilton-Port Fairy Road (not the Mount Napier Road), then follow the Mt Napier Access signs. Turn into Murroa Lane to Coles Track and then turn left into Menzles Pit road and continue to Menzles Pit to reach the start of the summit walk. As usual, please ensure the cache is well hidden from casual observation again before you leave. Also, please ensure the container seal remains in place, and the lid is tightened firmly to keep it all waterproof.
