"A CONFEDERACY OF DUNCES," is a best selling fiction novel written by native New Orleanean, John Kennedy Toole. With a degree from Tulane University and a master's degree from Columbia University, he taught at 3 different colleges before his death by suicide in 1969, at the age of 31.
Years later and after being turned down by a number of publishers, his mother succeeded in getting it published. It was greeted with critical acclaim and in 1981, was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. More than 1.5 million copies are currently in circulation, in 18 different languages.
A life-size statue of the novel's main character, Ignatius J. Reilly, stands as a monument to this literary classic. You will find him in surroundings with which he is familiar (read the plaques on the flanking columns).
To get credit for the find and as evidence of your actual visit, email me the first line written on the left plaque WHEN claiming the find, NOT BEFORE and NOT LATER (to eliminate the burden of my having to match them). If you are working with an app that doesn’t allow you to email me, wait until you can get to a computer so that you can do both of these things simultaneously. If you are part of a team, I still want the answer from you individually. Photo proof of your visit is not an acceptable alternative. If you are not willing to follow these simple instructions, please go visit another virtual. This is not an armchair cache so if you didn't actually visit, don't post the find.
The book is a must for those interested in the character of life in New Orleans and the statue is a must for those who have already read the novel. And if you have trouble finding the street, shame on you; at 171 feet, it's the widest main city street in the U.S.A. Good luck and Happy hunting.
They take him down briefly during Mardi Gras so he won't get damaged. You can still get credit by emailing the correct answer.
