Geocache Description:

This is the seventh cache placed in a series of caches highlighting the San José Public Library system. I will place a few caches every week until the opening of the new MLK Main Library, when this series will have its grand finale.

The Calabazas Branch is more than 30 years old and was built at a time when the area population was small and collections were limited mostly to book materials. Now the branch has a wide variety of materials in many formats, including instructional and feature film videos, DVDs, children's kits, audio cassettes, music CDs, books on tape, and access to electronic information through the Internet.

Calabazas Branch is a community library which serves a culturally diverse neighborhood.  Calabazas has language materials in Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Russian, and Hebrew.  These language collections are heavily used, especially the Chinese and Russian collections.

The area is comprised mainly of single family homes, with many families coming to the branch for service.  The community is highly educated; patrons consider the library very important and stress this with their children.

The Children's collection is heavily used, making up 45% of the branch circulation.  Some other special collections include: career and job information, large print books, computer books, ESL, adult new reader, citizenship books and tapes, parenting books, home improvement and decorating, consumer information, investment information, college guides and scholastic test books.

Recreational reading is very important to branch users; Calabazas features the latest bestseller fiction and nonfiction as well as local and world newspapers and magazines.  Since 1994, Calabazas has had a rise in circulation of over 100% and has become a very lively branch.

Groundbreaking for the new 9,000 sq. ft. Calabazas branch building, funded by capital improvement funds, will begin in 2009.
