Old Fort Meade was originally established as a Cavalry post for the 7th Cavalry in 1878 and served as a military function until 1944.
Fort Meade has an interesting past. It was the only military post in the Blackhills during the region's frontier era. Numerous cavalry and military units were stationed at Fort Meade through the years and had outlasted 22 other posts in what was then the Dakota Territory.
This was the home for 10 years to Comanche, the famous horse heavily wounded at the " Little Big Horn" battlegrounds and retired with honors.
Fort Meade also has the distinction of being the birthplace to the National Anthem. "The Star Spangled Banner" was first played on July 4th 1892 at the end of a concert presented by the regimental band. In 1931 congress made it official.
In April 1945 Old Fort Meade was officially dedicated as a VA hospital and is governed by the Department of Veterans Affairs. The Blackhills Healthcare Fort Meade Medical Center is a modern health care facility with the distinction of celebrating a colorful history and is one of South Dakota's largest employer.
We felt this local attraction was worth visiting. The museum is open from May 15 thru Sept.15 with a small fee for the tour and tell the host what brought you there. We hope you find the cache and that it takes you back in time when Fort Meade played a vital role as a cavalry post and to the present as it serves our veteran men and women of the US Armed Forces.
