Great Blasket Island has a facinating history and rugged beauty and is well worth the trip if you find yourself in the Dingle Peninsula in the west of County Kerry.
The cache is located halfway along the ridge that forms the island. It's a technically easy 2 mile walk up a path from the village, but 240 m (nearly 800 feet) of climb, and some sections where there is little but grass and a few sheep between you and a long fall into the sea might make it unsuitable for some. The cache is playing card pack sized plastic box located under a 20x20 cm flat stone, amid a 'P' shaped pile of stones atop one of the many minor summits of the ridge (you don't need to go near the steep slope to the north). Intrepid cache hunters could carry on following the path further along the island to the main summit or beyond time permitting. If the weather is clear the view from the ridge is superb and worth the effort.
Getting to the island is via a short ferry ride from Dunquin, or a longer ride from Dingle harbour. Be aware that some of the advertised 'Blasket Islands Boat Trips' from Dingle don't actually land on the island, but circle it instead. Regardless of which trip you intend to take be warned that they may not run in rough weather, and in nice weather you may have to wait a while for a boat as spaces are limited. Being stranded on the islands overnight is a possibility if the weather turns nasty, although there is basic accommodation on the island. Before you travel to the island a visit to the Blasket Interpretive Centre in Dunquin might help you understand something of the unique nature of this special place. It's also worth checking some of the websites about this place which contain more information on how to get there and what to do when you get there.
Before you set off for to do this cache ensure that you have enough time to return in time for last ferry of the day, and are equiped for several hours of walking in remote and at times dangerous terrain with very changeable weather. As with any walk in upland areas it's a good idea to let somebody else know where you are going in case of difficulties. You will probably need to allow at least half a day to do this cache and return to the mainland.
