Geocache Description:

A well-maintained historical marker and surrounding area on the way to Zion National Park.

We’ve come to appreciate virtual caches. A lot of pride often goes into establishing them so the next generation can realize what happened in these out of the way spots. This marker is one of them and it’s extremely obvious that the townsfolk take care of this tiny place of local history. Just don’t stop at the major marker – look around and find all of them (you’ll have to into order to answer the questions!)

Hurricane (nope, not pronounced like the weather phenomena, but as HUR’-aken) got its name from a legendary expedition of 1860s pioneers who were descending the steep cliffs above the present townsite when a strong wind came up. Erastus Snow (who later met up with William Flake in 1878 to found the town of Snowflake, Arizona) compared the winds with a hurricane and named the place Hurricane Hill. This area also became a stopping point on the trail between Yellowstone and the Grand Canyon for early national park adventurers. A canal (remnants of it and a canal hiking trail nearby) brought water from the Virgin River to the Hurricane Bench in 1893 and allowed farming in the area. In 1906, the town was officially founded and it was in the nearby bowery at this site that the townsfolk decided on what to name the place.

In order to receive credit for this cache, you need to answer TWO questions (email them to us): 1. Who was the “man of vision”? and 2. What kind of camp was also at this spot?

Enjoy your visit to southern Utah!
