Geocache Description:

This cache is located in the extreme southern end of Chatfield State Park, requiring a walk along flat terrain, along a well-defined trail.

The idea for this cache arose as I wanted to place a cache that required a little bit of walking, as well as avoiding having to pay the entrance fee for Chatfield State Park. The park, on the southwest edge of metro Denver, is well known for its boating and fishing on the reservoir, its bike trails, and its dog walking area.

In order to legally avoid the entrance fee, park at the southern boundary of the park at: N39 29.678' W105 05.501, at the Discovery Pavillion parking lot. This lot is at the extreme southern end of Wadsworth Boulevard, also known as State Highway 121. From the lot there are a number of paths leading north towards the cache, all will get one there eventually. I would suggest walking around the small pond then along the right shore of the small lake. The walk will be just over one mile each way, with no elevation changes of any significance. There is a good trail leading almost all of the way to the cache; if you find yourself wanting to do some extended serious bushwacking or getting your feet wet, you should reconsider your route. The Platte River is nearby, but you will not need to cross it. Enjoy.

An alternate parking area is located inside the park were the road loops around the southern end of the lake. If you are already inside the park looking for other caches, this is a good starting point. The walk is significantly shorter, but not as nice.

Update on 5/28/03: The cache was moved to a new spot about 300 feet north, since several people spotted a large snake that apparently lives under the log at the original cache site.

As for the gorilla, well, if one sat there long enough, there is theoretically a chance a gorilla might happen by. Maybe.
