This cache is located on Watership Down, a large chalk down located 1.5 miles south west of the Hampshire town of Kingsclere.
This cache is the final part of a three part cache, themed around the book 'Watership Down' by Richard Adams.
Richard Adams grew up in this area and knew it well, so it became the real life setting for his best-selling book and the fluffy, furry fictional characters that made their epic journey across this beautiful part of north Hampshire. If you haven't read the book, shame on you... It's a masterpiece and a must read for all ages!
As well as being the title of the book, this is the area in the book where the rabbits find their 'ideal' location for a new warren (the small 'Beach Hanger' wood on top of the down), but suddenly realise there are no does amongst them!... and so the story continues...
From chapter 19,'Fear in the Dark':
'...During silflay, however, Hazel mentioned Blackberry's idea to no one but Fiver. Later on, when most of the rabbits had finished feeding and were either playing in the grass or lying in the sunshine, he suggested that they might go across to the hanger - 'just to see what sort of a wood it is'. Bigwig and Silver agreed at once and in the end no one stayed behind.'
The cache can be found via the public footpaths which runs across the width of the down. Parking is readily available at N 51°18.331 - W 1°15.681 on the B3051 Kingsclere to Overton road.
Within the cache (ammo box) you will find a 'rabbit' theme (of course!). Please try to keep to the theme if you can... if not, don't worry too much. You will also find a copy of 'Watership Down'. Please DO NOT take the 'Cache Copy', but feel free to sit and read for a while. Apparently, Richard Adams first 'told' the story of 'Watership Down' as a way to amuse his children during a car journey to Stratford...!!!
Of course, there's a very good chance you'll see a few rabbits and hares along the way!... You may also see a racehorse or two, as the downs are covered in 'gallops' used to train and exercise the horses.
A word of advice... Personally I wouldn't take on this cache on a windy day!... and take a drink with you.
