This area used to be a weird little amusement park called Aquarena
Springs. Some notable attractions were dancing chickens, mermaids
that could guzzle soda pop underwater, and Ralph, the swimming pig.
Those days are gone now, and the area has been renamed Aquarena
Center. Now there is an aquarium, endangered species exhibits,
nature trails, and displays with an emphasis on education and
preservation.
The glass bottomed boats are still here, however, and you will
need to take a ride on one to get the answer for this cache. Boat
rides are $9 each.
The boat ride includes several stops over springs in the area
called Spring Lake. These springs form the San Marcos River. There
are several endangered species which live here. Each individual
spring has its own name. To get credit for this cache, email me the
name of the spring that you pass over when you get to the
coordinates listed above.
No admission to wander around the grounds.
The workers assured me that Ralph lived out his final days on a
farm and has now gone to pig heaven. I remember when everyone would
file into the Underwater Theatre to watch the mermaid show. Then
there would be a great splash, and it was Ralph, paddling furiously
to catch up to a baby bottle full of milk. That was better than Sea
World any day.
