Geocache Description:

This cache will require a 4X4

Paria –Pahreah is part of the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument.

The town of Paria was first settled in 1870. By the spring of 1844 there were 107 members of the Mormon Church, plus a number of other cattlemen and about 20 Piute Indians living in Paria.
By 1877 the town was well established and the settlers had nut orchards, vineyards, vegetable farms, and cattle and sheep.

In the summer of 1883 there were a series of floods. It was followed by severe winter of 1883-1834, more flooding occurred in the summer of 1884. This flooding washed away farmhouses and fields and converted the narrow stream into a wide river. The river extended from canyon wall to canyon wall. This was the beginning of the end for Paria.
People started to leave and by September pf 1884 only 48 people were left. In the following years people came and went but mostly people left.

In 1912 Charles H. Spencer brought in miners to mine for gold. Then again in 1921 Spencer returned to build a dam in the box canyon, but both turned into a failures for Spencer.

By the early 1900 only a few people lived in or around the town. Many people came to Paria to try and make something of this town. All failed after 1942 no one lived in Paria again.

The summer of 1943 brought back some people to the little town when a movie set was built and a movie about Buffalo Bill and Geronimo was made. There were 300 Navajos, Joel Mcrae, Anthony Quinn and Maurene O’hara. Many western movies were filmed here. The old move set burned to the ground and was later rebuilt. The movie set still stand today with the back drop of the Staircase standing behind it.

The movie set and the old cemetery are on the west side of the river. What ruins that are left of the town or on the east side of the river. If there is water in the river don’t try to cross it even with 4 wheele drive as it is very deep and very swift moving water. The river should be dry or real low when the the snow has melted and the spring run off stops.

This cache is for 4 wheele drive only. No cars or vans. If you get stuck in this canyon you are along ways from help. DO NOT ATTEMPT THIS CACHE IF IT IS STORMING OR THE ROAD IS WET!

As this cemetery is part of the Grand Staircase-Escatante National Monument take lots of picture and leave only a few footprints.

Make sure that you visit the ruins of Paria if you can get across the river and stop at the old movie set.
