Since its establishment by the Navy in 1854, Mare Island Naval
Shipyard has built 512 ships and repaired hundreds more. At one
point during World War II, the shipyard population exceeded 46,000
and a destroyer, the USS Ward, was built in just 17 1/2 days -- a
speed record that has yet to be broken.
The location of this cache, in a public park along the Mare
Island Strait, offers a great view of the shipyard across the
water.
Although many ships began their lives here at Mare Island, one
very famous boat was decommissioned here and is memorialized in a
brass plaque. To log this cache, find the plaque and email me with
the name of the ship, what made it special and the date on the
plaque. Then log your find.
