This is the trailhead for a little-known parcel of public land
in the Palouse River Valley. The parcel is an abandoned right of way for a train line.
Hidden just off WA SR 26 is the trailhead for the Colfax Trail. This abandoned train line is the property of the Whitman County Park Board. The trail is un-developed, the walking surface is uneven, but this trail gives access to one of the best country walks on the Palouse.
Right where most travelers place their tray-tables in the upright, locked position for the long drive to Seattle,
turn to the right on a small road near a gravel pit.
Drive through the equipment yards, gravel piles, and hay storage to the trailhead. The parking area is currently quite muddy. Make sure to bring shoes for the varying conditions you will encounter.
Proceed on foot past the "No Motor Vehicles" sign and you are on the trail. This is a great spot for watching wildlife. There is also the occasional rattlesnake and possibly poison oak. Some distance down the trail the hiker enters a pasture and shares the hike with a herd of cows. The trail is about 1.5 miles one-way. The trail ends at a spot where a train bridge has been removed. In summer, interpid hikers could ford the river and continue through the tunnel to who-knows-where.
The cache is a sandwich box. with a log, pen, vial of pixie dust, a glob of colored glass, and the Froggy Went a Traveling bug.
