Twelve Knights’ Quarry (Carmarthenshire)
This walk combines spectacular views of the magical Carreg Cennen castle, the brooding Black Mountain, an interesting cave and a rare geographical feature – a turlough. A turlough is a seasonal lake which is filled by water rising from below and has no streams running into or out of it. In effect the bottom of the lake lies on the water table. This is the ONLY turlough on mainland Britain.
Navigate your way to either Carmel or Llandybie in Carmarthenshire and find the entrance to the park at these coordinates (N51º 49.740 W004º 01.527 or SN605164 using the OS 100m grid). This car park is not easy to find if you are a stranger to this area. Perhaps the easiest thing to do is to navigate to Llandybie and take the Pentre Gwenlais road. Park your car and pass the plaque unveiled by the Prince of Wales, which is next to a picnic area.
Follow the footpath and look out for Carreg Cennen castle at the second viewing point – bring binoculars if you have them. As the path descends and then flattens out, take the footpath to the right. When you reach a wooden post it is time to leave the main footpath and head for the cave. The cave is reputed to be the burial place of twelve giant skeletons and you will need a torch to explore it. Make your way back to the main path and you will soon come to the turlough, which is usually dry in summer and a lake in winter. It is also a major breeding site for toads.
And by the way don’t forget to look for the cache somewhere along the journey.
