In 1845, religious persecution caused a group of people to charter the ship Brooklyn to take them from New York to the Mexican territory of California. The ship left on February 4th, 1846 and arrived in Yerba Buena on July 31st, 1846. On the way, they stopped off at the island the man who inspired the story Robinson Crusoe was shipwrecked on. They went around the horn, stopped off at Honolulu, Hawaii before ending their journey in the San Francisco Bay. The American population of Yerba Buena doubled with the arrival of the Brooklyn.
The coordinates will bring you to a marker commemorating the voyage of the Brooklyn. To log this find, find the marker, enjoy the bay vista, log the find and email us the length, width and weight of the ship. If there is a difference, we will discuss it off line. Now a days, the building behind acts as a navigation marker for modern day mariners. The grounds are open daily.
