Geocache Description:

The Laurier Woods is an oasis of nature located in the heart of the urban area of North Bay. It consists of over 200 acres of marsh and forest that affords excellent walking trails and wildlife viewing opportunities.

From 8,500 to 4,700 years ago, all the waters of the upper Great Lakes Basin went through the North Bay Outlet. This area was the main drainage channel for the much larger Great Lakes that flowed into what is now Trout Lake and the Mattawa and Ottawa Rivers. Watch for the rocks that show the effects of the water current through out the area.

This is an excellent cache to find in the winter since the trails are used all winter and are usually well packed. The clue should give you a good landmark that is easy to find even in the deepest snow.

This land is privately owned and while the owners have been very gracious in allowing public access for many years, the Friends of Laurier Woods have been trying to secure the land in public ownership so it could be properly developed as a conservation area. This is a very delicate ecosystem, so please look after our “gem” while you visit. To access the trail system go to the parking area at the southeast end of Laurier Street (where else) at N 46º18.374 W79º26.806. The trail system starts on the opposite side of the railway tracks.
