Geocache Description:

A nice easy virtual located in Maize, Kansas.

Maize South High School Maverick

Now here is a Virtual with quite an interesting story. The sculpture at the listed coordinates is one half of the original sculpture by John Kearney. The original was named “Two Steers” and was built by Kearney in the late 70’s. After construction it was purchased by Sedgwick County and put on display outside the Kansas Coliseum in 1978.

The steers were an art centerpiece for the coliseum and admired by visitors that came to the coliseum for events for almost 35 years. In 2002 when Virtual caches were allowed I just knew that the “Two Steers” had to be set up as a Virtual cache. The cache originally was named “A Lotta Bull”.

Well everything was fine for years until after the construction of the new Intrust Bank Arena in downtown Wichita. Sedgwick County made the decision not to make the needed improvements to the coliseum and sell it rather than spending any more money on it. When it was sold sadly this meant that the sculpture had go as well.

A Maize South High School parent named James Mc Donald approached the County and asked the commissioners if they would consider donating one of the steers to them to use to represent their school as the mascot. The county agreed to his request and one of the steers went to Maize South High and the other to the City of Wichita to be displayed in Delano Park in the Delano District. So the steers were tore down and split into two never to see each other again.

Well this is where the story gets better! A group of student’s parents and other volunteers worked on the restoration of the steer that you see here and donations of $6,000.00 were collected to pay for the foundation work. I have been waiting for months for this guy to finally get moved into his new home and now here he is!

I am very happy to be able to have you visit this awesome guy and check out this very impressive sculpture. I think everyone did a tremendous job restoring him and I am so glad to see that he has a permanent home here as a Maverick.

To verify that you have actually visited this cache and claim credit for a find, E-Mail Me Here, how many stones make up the top layer of the foundation that surrounds the steer?

Have fun !!!
