History
This cache is located in the Freehold Public Library at 281⁄2 East Main Street. One of the last few of 36 Carnegie libraries in New Jersey that is still used as a public library. The build was recently renovated to be ADA compliant and with central air-conditioning installed.
It replaced the original Freehold library that opened on January 6, 1900, in the Lloyd Building at the corner of West Main and Throckmorton Street with a collection of 500 volumes but was destroyed by fire in December 1901. After the fire Marion Laird, chairwoman of the Library Committee of the King's Daughters, wrote to Carnegie asking for financial support for a new library building. The philanthropist offered $10,000. Freehold was the ninth town to get a grant from Carnegie, and the second town to complete their new building.
In the spring of 1903, The King's Daughters raised $2,000 through donations to buy the lot from the widow Doty. In the summer of 1903 Frederick A. Brower contracted to construct the new library, which cost of $8,874 and opened the following year.
The Monmouth Inquirer wrote about the news of the new library on July 30, 1903.
“Plans for the Carnegie Library building at Freehold have been prepared … The new library will be 44 feet front and 55 feet deep and will be built of brick. The front will be very handsome, and a special brick will be used ... There will be a six foot stoop and the structure will contain a main floor with a 16-foot ceiling, a basement with 10-foot ceiling and an attic"
