On 2 May 2000 in USA (3 May in New Zealand) the Presidential decree by Bill Clinton came into force and selective availability on the USA GPS satellite network was switched off (the fictitious big blue switch). At that moment accuracy of GPS devices changed from around 20-200 metres down to 5 -10 metres. A day later on 3 May (4 May here in NZ) the first geocache was hidden in the USA and within a month we had at least two hidden here in New Zealand. This is the 24th anniversary of that special date. To celebrate I will be hosting an event which I would have liked to make a 2/4 DT event but that is not allowed under current rules. So it will be a DT 1/4 event. However I plan to hide a DT 2/4 cache nearby to commemorate the 24th anniversary.
This will involve a steep hill climb however the path up is a lot easier now with new steps added all the way to the top. The meeting place is the junction of the Rata Track and ECNZ track. Great views on a sunny day. I can't guarantee what 4 May 2024 will look like but bring a raincoat and warm clothing, a drink (hot or cold) and maybe some snack food. This is happening wet or fine, windy or calm. You don't have to stay long. It can take anything from 30 mins to 1 hour to get up here depending on fitness levels.
