Trackables and Geocoins
Lots of geocachers have heard of trackables in some way, shape, or form. However, I have found that most geocachers don’t fully understand them and their exciting history. Maybe this cache can help!
Trackables were invented by Jon Stanley (aka moun10bike) in 2001. He wanted a way to track the movements of items placed in geocaches, so he created a unique tracking number that could be used to follow their journey online. Travel bugs, geocoins, and tags are some common examples of trackables.
Travel bugs are small keychain-like items with a metal tag attached to them. The tag has a unique tracking number that can be used to track the travel bug’s movements. Geocoins are similar to travel bugs but are usually made of metal and minted like a coin. Tags are small, flat items that can be attached to almost anything.
Geocoins are often used as collectible items that are meant to be kept by the geocacher who finds them. They are usually made of metal and have unique designs on them. Some geocoins are made to commemorate special events, like a milestone in geocaching or a significant historical event. For example, Moun10Bike geocoins are popular among geocachers and are made to celebrate special events in geocaching. These geocoins feature a bicycle design and are available in different colors.
Geocoins are also made to represent a specific location or theme. For example, there are geocoins designed to represent a state or country, such as the Washington State geocoin, which features the state’s flag and iconic landmarks. Other geocoins are made to represent a specific hobby or interest, like the photography geocoin, which features a camera design and is perfect for photography enthusiasts who enjoy geocaching.
Geocoins are significant because they allow geocachers to show off their achievements and connect with other geocachers around the world. They are also a great way to commemorate special events and experiences and create lasting memories. So, next time you go geocaching, don't forget to keep an eye out for these unique and exciting items!
