Les falaises de Jussat présentent des fossiles de stromatolithes datant de l’oligocène (30 millions d’années). On observe également des trous cylindriques correspondant à des cocons ou fourreaux fossiles de larves de phryganes.
À l'Oligo-miocène, le lac de Limagne abritait une abondante faune de larves aquatiques d'insectes, et, en particulier, des larves de trichoptères voisins des phryganes actuelles. Très souvent, les larves faisaient leur fourreau non pas en agglomérant des grains de sable, mais des coquilles (ou des fragments de coquille) de tout petits gastéropodes du genre Hydrobie. Des millions et des millions de fourreaux de larves de phryganes fait de milliards de coquilles d'hydrobies sont ainsi fossilisés en Limagne.
Il se trouve que ces millions de larves de phryganes venaient se métamorphoser dans des sites riches en cyanobactéries et où croissaient des stromatolithes. On peut supposer que les larves se fixaient sur le haut d'une concrétion stromatolihique en train de croitre et y abandonnaient leur fourreau. Le dépôt de calcaire stromatolithique cimentait les fourreaux et les englobait dans des lamines calcaires caractéristiques.
Quelques fossiles exceptionnels de nymphes sont également observables !
Il existe deux types de fossiles différents, à savoir, les fossiles directs qui sont les restes des êtres vivants et les fossiles indirects, qui sont les traces de sa vie ou de ses mouvements (empreintes, déjections etc...). Ce processus est un terme global qui en réalité peut désigner une minéralisation, une carbonisation, une incrustation, les ambres ou encore une momification (exceptionnellement rare).

In the Oligo-Miocene, Lake Limagne sheltered an abundant fauna of aquatic insect larvae, and, in particular, larvae of caddisflies close to today's caddisflies. Very often, the larvae made their sheath not by agglomeration of grains of sand, but of the shells (or shell fragments) of very small gastropods of the genus Hydrobia. Millions and millions of sheaths of caddisfly larvae made of billions of hydrobia shells are thus fossilized in Limagne. It turns out that these millions of caddisfly larvae came to metamorphose in sites rich in cyanobacteria and where stromatolites grew. It can be assumed that the larvae attached themselves to the top of a growing stromatolithic concretion and left their sheath there. The stromatolitic limestone deposit cemented the sheaths and enclosed them in characteristic limestone laminae.
Some exceptional nymph fossils can also be observed !
There are two different types of fossils, namely, the direct fossils that are the remains of living beings and the indirect fossils, which are the traces of his life or his movements (imprints, droppings, etc.). This process is a global term that can actually mean mineralization, carbonization, encrustation, amber or mummification (exceptionally rare).
